Thailand train travel is a great way to see more countryside

Thailand train travel

I think Thailand train travel is one of the best ways to get around. Its certainly the safest for a long journey. The trains are clean and comfortable and the service is run very well.

How far will a train take me.

From Bangkok trains travel north to Chiang Mai, the journey taking about 11 to 13 hours.

From Bangkok south to Hat Yai taking about 16 to 17 hours.

From Bangkok east to Pattaya taking about 3 to 4 hours.

And northeast to Nong Khai with a journey of about 11 to 12 hours.

Notice the length of these journeys, the reason being Thailands trains are a lot slower than most in other countries.

One advantage is that you get to see a lot of the beautiful countryside at a snails pace......well not quite a snail.

Thailand train travel sleeper seat There is a choice of seats, first, second and third class, sleepers, sit up seats, recliners and air-conditioned.

Bookings for sleepers should be made in advance, and all other seat tickets can be purchased from the stations.

Train travel tips

Thailand train travel bottom bunk No need to worry about getting too hungry on the long journeys as there is a dining car on all long distance trains, food is very reasonable and good and is delivered to your seat.

If you want to sleep on your journey, try to book a lower bunk where you are shielded from the bright train lights.

My next trip very soon will consist of a lot of train journeys so I will purchase a twenty day rail pass, and for about $50 Australian you cant go wrong.
